The Role of the Four Books (of the Hunter Writing System: Sentence Sense text) and of the Videotape--and What to Order

The four books are as follows:  the text proper (in hard or soft cover), the Skills Practice Book, the Answer Book, and the Teacher's Guide.  The text proper--that is, the grammar instruction text--comes in hard- or soft-cover (the content of these books is identical).

The text proper is the core text.  It contains all the grammar instruction and is filled with charts (with shading for emphasis), examples, background truths, chapter reviews, and an occasional mnemonic.  Its cue to the learner as to when to switch to the Skills Practice Book is a  large black dot accompanied by instructions to go to the particular "practice" and page in that book.

The Skills Practice Book is both an indispensable companion to the the grammar text (it has all the practice exercises for the grammar instruction) and a complete course in paragraph-and-essay writing (you will find the composition lessons at the end of each of the seventeen chapters of grammar exercises).

The Answer Book has all the answers for the Skills Practice Book's grammar exercises; these answers are always displayed within the context of the whole of the source's phrase, sentence, or paragraph.

The Teacher's Guide includes a grammar test to be given at the end of each chapter (together with answers and suggestions for scoring); tips for instruction (throughout); and alternative examples (so that teachers can explain the material with examples that are different from the text's).

The videotape of orientation is a graphic demonstration of how the key parts of the program work; it is a simulation of the workshop/presentation I give.  While it is meant for teacher insight, it is not meant for student learning.  It furnishes a helpful overview of the program (note that the Teacher's Guide--page 14--offers a limited overview of the system). The videotape also provides a clearer sense of how and why this system is so effective.

What to order:  Teachers will want to order all four books.  In addition, classroom teachers should order both a (grammar) text and a Skills Practice Book for each child (some who have no other choice have resorted to buying just a Skills Practice Book per child).  Home-schooling teachers/parents, who should order all four books, should also order another Skills Practice Book for each additional child.  (Some choose to order another grammar text for an additional child, too.)  The videotape is available for purchase ($15) or for rent ($10) with my assurance of a  $6 refund if it is returned.

Additional background help:  If you want me to send you a sample chapter from each of the books, I would have to charge $3 for it because I have only a limited supply.  However, I would refund two of those dollars if you return it.  Please mail me your request, and pay by check or money order.
